How to nail your brand and your website

Updated on 27 January 2016

After branding, your web site is one of the most important things to focus on for your business. Depending on the type of web site you have in mind, it may or may not be possible to design the site on your own.

Before you dive into developing your site, it’s important to consider the overall vision and goals for your business. Answering these questions beforehand will save a lot of time, money and confusion in the long run.

Start by considering the message you’d like to send. Which is basically asking – what does your company stand for, what do you want people to think about when they think of your brand and why would they want to do business with you. Think about the style of writing as well. Does the writing need to sound professional, or can it be light-hearted and free, or even funny? What sort of mood do you want to convey? Dreamy? Pastel? Bright and colorful? Moody?

Next up is branding. Your message will be expressed, not only through the written word, but also your branding. Think about the feelings you want to evoke in the customer when they think about your business. Decide on what colors, fonts, photos, and style best fit your brand. Don’t take this lightly. Branding may seem like it would be an easy decision, but subliminally, these choices says a lot about what your brand stands for and how people perceive it. For instance, if you pick a dark, brooding style, say reds, blacks and gold, it might be perfect for a rock band. But if you are trying to sell vacations, it probably won’t work at all. And vice versa.

Whether you work with a web designer or design your own web site, knowing where you stand with your branding will offer direction for the overall look and feel for your site and your business. This in turn will allow customers to recognize your brand at a glance, feel like you have everything together, believe in your brand and want to do business with you.
